KASHI / LIGHT draws upon the ancient meaning of Kashi—the City of Light—where illumination transcends the physical to signify knowledge, creativity, devotion and civilisational continuity.

The Biennale expands this idea by presenting Banaras as a sensorium: a city understood not through monuments alone, but through the complete spectrum of human experience. Its ghats, temples, music, textiles, crafts, scholarship, rituals, aromas and everyday rhythms together form a living cultural ecosystem where tangible and intangible heritage exist as one.

Rather than treating Banaras as a backdrop for contemporary art, the Biennale recognises the city itself as a continuously evolving work of culture. Through visual arts, craft, textiles, music, performance, public programmes and immersive experiences, KASHI / LIGHT invites audiences to engage with one of the world's oldest living cities as a place where history is not preserved, but continually created—where every street, sound, gesture and tradition contributes to an enduring dialogue between heritage and contemporary imagination.
